The story goes back to the Margravine Caroline Louise. She collected curiosities and natural history items during the years 1752-83. These were made accessible in 1785 to the public as a natural history collection. The present building dates back from the years 1866-72, where it was built as a courtesy Library and natural history collection. The Vivarium startet at the elementary school Daxlanden in 1938 for teaching purposes and consisted of several aquariums and terrariums. More and more citizens watched this show until 1944, the school was then bombed by the allied. Some of the animals were then placed in 1948 in the basement  and made open for public again (because the museum was also unfortunately Bombed). The exhibition grew quickly and in 1962 moved to its present location at the ground floor.

The  aquariumdepartment of the vivarium has over 30 aquariums and shows in particular the world of the tropical fresh water, the Mediterranean and the coral reef. Shown are fish like archer fish, arowanas and cave tetra. In the large terrarium reptiles and amphibians are shown like the angelhead lizards, Aufenbergs dragons and Wagler's Temple Viper.
